The first Quakers believed the world as they knew it was ending and that the kingdom was soon to be established but soon found the ‘meantime’ was extending. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Quakers worked to reshape the movement for long-term spiritual integrity. Then in the Twentieth century Quakerism in Britain reinvented itself as part of ‘liberal religion’. Using key texts from each period, we will examine this heritage and ask where we are going from here.
