Welcome
What do we do?- BCT Training reaches out to those adults and young people who need assistance with their literacy, numeracy or English as a Second Language; particularly those who are unable to access college provision.
- The International Adult Literacy Survey and the Moser Report record that over 20% of the adult population in Britain have very low literacy and numeracy skills.
- The low level of attainment in these basic skills is a matter of grave concern with worrying implications for basic employability and social inclusion.
- It is also a factor preventing many individuals from taking part in, and succeeding in, learning which could raise their job-related skills and to adequately support themselves, their families and their local communities.
Why do we do it?- The recommendations contained in the Moser Report were put into place through the rolling out of the Skills for Life strategy in the first part of this decade.
- However, since 2005 the government focus has been directed on developing skills within the workplace and now there is less funding available for those for whom employment is not presently an option.
- The Christian Church historically was largely responsible for education in Britain.
- BCT Training recognises that the church in many areas is still a centre for the local community and as such is well positioned to reach out to those who are marginalised in this way.
- Our goal is to train and support at least one Learning Champion in each church/fellowship who will have an understanding of barriers to learning, be able to identify and support those who are having difficulties and, above all, do what they can to widen access to learning within their families, at work, in their churches and local communities.
