Christian Faith becoming Flesh: Pop-Up Chaplaincy comes to the German Christmas Market

July 18th, 2018

CIGB’s (Churches and Industry Group) ‘be.friend’ Birmingham City Centre Retail Chaplaincy are organising for a pop-up Chaplaincy service to the staff and stall holders of the Frankfurt Christmas Market. Many staff work very long hours and are away from Germany, Romania and Poland for several weeks. The work can be stressful, with both quiet times and very busy times. Chaplains provide listening and befriending, and can provide pointers to further assistance. It can be hard for workers to remember what Christmas is all about.

Elaine Hutchinson, be.friend Team Leader, ran a Chaplaincy trial at the Christmas Market last year and it was welcomed both by the stall workers and the management. The Chaplaincy Team have information leaflets translated into both Polish and German so that people know exactly what the chaplaincy offers.  Elaine is looking for further chaplaincy volunteers for the six weeks from 15th November who might, for instance, be able to give a couple of hours a week. Polish, Romanian and German speakers would be very welcome!

Volunteer Chaplains to the Christmas Market will be trained by CIGB Workplace Chaplaincy – either as part of their 6 week Training Course (see below) or on a separate date.

The existing be.friend Birmingham Chaplaincy Team volunteers support shop workers at Grand Central and the Bullring, at the Indoor and Outdoor Markets and independent traders. The team is made up of 12 volunteers, and has vacancies.  Contact Elaine at [email protected] if you would like to know more about their work.
