George Floyd two years on…

This Wednesday marks the second anniversary of the murder in the USA of George Floyd. Among the international repercussions of his tragic death was the beginning of a conversation between leaders of historic-, new- and Black-Majority Churches in Birmingham. The conversations, which took place online in view of the Covid-19 restrictions in operation at the time, led to the formation of a group called ‘Time4Change.’ By the autumn of 2020, the Time4Change group had produced the 15-point, anti-racist ‘Birmingham Charter.’ The text of the charter is available HERE. A list of signatories to the charter is available HERE. Several Time4Change gatherings, including the large event at St Andrew’s Football Stadium on Sunday 17 October, took place in the city in 2021.

As the second anniversary of the death of George Floyd arrives, the commitment of the Time4Change leaders to unite together against racial injustice remains strong. With this in mind, the group has now made available printed A3-size posters of the Birmingham Charter, as well as A4-sized certificates for use by churches and organisations that have signed up to it. The posters and certificates are meant to be displayed in prominent locations within church buildings as a reminder of the shared commitment to eradicate racism from the Church – and from society.

The A3-size posters are free-of-charge and can be picked up by arrangement from Birmingham City Church, Parade, Birmingham B1 3QQ. The churches and organisations which are signatories to the charter can order a free certificate HERE. While posters and certificates are both offered freely, donations are welcome and can be made via THIS LINK. Sign up to the Birmingham Charter HERE.
