United World Week 1 – 7 May “In time for peace”

The worldwide, ecumenical Focolare movement is celebrating its annual United World Week from 1 – 7 May, with the 2020 theme, ‘In Time for Peace.’ A global Focolare video conference was held on Saturday, 2 May, and many more online regional events continue through the week. The Focolare movement, which originated in Italy in 1943, is now present in 182 nations and encompasses 2 million participants.

Revd Professor Dr Ioan Sauca, acting General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, sent a video message to Focolare young people to coincide with United World Week. In his message, Sauca said, ‘The worldwide fellowship of churches stands in solidarity with you as we pray for healing and recovery of humanity and all of God’s creation, especially during this time of uncertainty and fear caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.’

Fauca continued, ‘The youth of Focolare reveal the true breadth and ambition of Chiara Lubich’s vision for the ecumenical movement: not simply to bridge ancient divides among Christians but also to live Christian discipleship in such a way as to heal the world. You are a gift to our communities. Your passion and desire to change the world inspire and motivate the rest of us as we confront the realities of today.’
